I bet if you asked most people that have a job, they would prefer to be their own boss. I can just hear it now, "If I were the boss, I would do this and I would do that. Why is the boss doing it this way? What could the boss be thinking?" But let me be clear, and I speak from experience...being your own boss is one thing, but becoming an entrepreneur and developing essential entrepreneur skills is a completely different ball game.
An entrepreneur who is truly the epitome of the word is the type of person that is comfortable in leadership roles and sees the benefit to taking risks. I don't mean taking risks just to take risks. Rather, a calculated risk with the potential for a big return. This person takes on any risk and liability that their business venture requires. There are substantially more risks involving non-monetary decisions than monetary decisions. The bottom line remains the same, "The buck stops here!", just as Harry Truman once said. This statement should be the slogan for any entrepreneur because succeed or fail, the buck does stop with you, the entrepreneur.
There really is no one type of person or clear method to becoming an entrepreneur. There are entrepreneur skills and traits that most people will agree an entrepreneur should possess. Besides being adventurous and self-reliant, an entrepreneur must be willing to make mistakes. As there is no handbook for becoming an entrepreneur, a lot of the business decisions made will simply be by trial and error. For entrepreneurs, failures must be seen as opportunities to learn and to move closer to your goals. Oddly enough, failures can become a welcome thing. What distinguishes a successful entrepreneur from all the rest is theirr ability to turn mistakes around into opportunities..
Being an entrepreneur sounds good enough, but many people don't realize how much self-motivation it takes to start your own business. This is such an important entrepreneur skill, and people who aren't willing to continually renew their purpose in becoming an entrepreneur need not even try. Equally as important entrepreneur skills are to state your intentions clearly, take deliberate action to attain your goals, and, just as important, allow the results to happen. Any business is only as reliable as the person in charge of it. Without at least the three essential entrepreneurial skills identified above, your business will not succeed no matter how hard you work at it.
Speaking of work...a lot of work goes into being an entrepreneur. Anyone that tells you differently is not being honest with you. Plain and simple. If you think about what entrepreneurship is, it is simply a person taking on the responsibilities of a business. That means accounting, any payroll if there are employees, distribution problems, retirement accounts, legal concerns and everything else that comes with the business. Learning how to leverage your time is a key entrepreneur skill that comes with operating your own business. There just isn't enough time in the day to handle everything. Look at all of the successful people in life. They have learned how to delegate in order to best manage themselves and their businesses.
Another key entrepreneur skill is to have a solid, well thought out business plan. This is essential at the beginning of the venture and is one of the first major responsibilities of the entrepreneur. A business plan will help to clarify and announce your goals and intentions, create a plan of action to meet them, and it will help to eliminate a lot of the confusion common in the process.
Many decisions should be weighed before becoming an entrepreneur. If a person's abilities and personality are geared towards entrepreneurship, then it might be a good undertaking. Becoming an entrepreneur can be an enriching experience for the right person who has found the right business and commits to continually developing the essential entrepreneur skills.
Truth be told, it can be a very vulnerable position to be in if you allow it. For the right person, however, entrepreneurship can be exactly the enriching experience that they need in order to feel fulfillment. The lessons learned about oneself in becoming an entrepreneur are plentiful and priceless.
